Military parades, the Olympic Games, dance performances and beauty contests – Köken Ergun's video installations are always about cultural events, ceremonial events and the rituals that define them. These are not always large-scale events with mass appeal, but often private events and those of groups that remain mostly hidden from the public. He documented Turkish weddings in Berlin as well as the everyday life of Turkish schools in Indonesia and Kenya and Filipino beauty contests in Israel on film. Ergun accompanies the protagonists of his works over long periods of time, thus creating detailed insights into cultural practices that are often politically influenced.
