Within performative situations, the Romanian artist Alexandra Pirici combines contemporary dance with language, space and politics. Largely presented in an exhibition context, the works described as “ongoing actions” usually last several hours – members of the audience are left to decide themselves how long they wish to remain.
Pirici regards the human body as a material that can perform sculpturally in the space, expanding both the notion of “sculpture” and complicating the expectation of performance as event. Textual and pictorial fragments from current discourses concerning technological developments and global events, as well as pop culture and the art world sometimes provide points of departure for her work.
Alexandra Pirici is currently developing a piece for Ruhr Ding: Territorien (Ruhr Thing: Territories). She is presenting her work during the preparatory process, providing a foretaste of her latest project.
