URBAN LIGHTS RUHR
Urban Lights Ruhr by Urbane Künste Ruhr introduced a new format for light art consisting of the combination of temporary light art works and a concluding symposium.
Urbane Künste Ruhr and the two groups of artists and architects osa – office for subversive architecture together with Christoph Rodatz and realities:united realized the temporary light works Discharge/Recharge and Sender in the urban context of Bergkamen.
A tower block built in the centre of Bergkamen in 1974 and visible over a long distance, at the same time landmark of the city and eyesore, has been vacant for 15 years and is to be demolished at the end of 2013. The international collective osa – office for subversive architecture and Christoph Rodatz realized a farewell performance with light and sound: Discharge/Recharge. The tower itself – painted completely in matt black – was turned into a sculpture. At nightfall it additionally became the projection screen for a laser installation looking back at individual stages of the building’s history – right up to the simulated demolition. Via a radio station specially installed by osa, the stories of Bergkamen’s citizens could be listened to.
On an adjoining park deck, realities:united from Berlin installed an oversized industrial robot, Sender, which, depending on light and weather conditions, independently conducted different activities. It was thus in direct contact with the city and its inhabitants and at the same time an ironical, tongue-in-cheek comment on the urban situation of the city of Bergkamen.
Urban Lights Ruhr Symposium
Urbane Künste Ruhr and the groups of artists osa – office for subversive architecture and realities:united invited protagonists of the international light art scene known to them, such as Marco Canevacci (Plastique Fantastique), Manuel Abendroth (LAb(au)), Jan Ehlen (RaumZeitPiraten), Alexander Stublic and Sans façon. In addition, Mona El Khafif (CCA URBANlab, San Francisco) as keynote speaker gave momentum to the discussion by reporting on the Urban Prototyping Festival in San Francisco.
Students of the master’s program of scenography and communication of the FH Dortmund (University of Applied Sciences) specially arranged the venue of the symposium, a vacancy in the Bergkamen-Arkaden (shopping mall), thus making it a tailor-made and unusual setting for the occasion.
