GESTERN DIE STADT VON MORGEN

22/06 – 07/09/2014

A cooperation project by Urbane Künste Ruhr and the network RuhrKunstMuseen

gestern die stadt von morgen (yesterday’s city of tomorrow) was an art project in public space at three locations in the Cultural Metropolis Ruhr that risked a new artistic perspective on the architectural visions of the 1960s and 70s in Marl, Bochum, and Mülheim a.d. Ruhr.

Still today, the optimistic spirit of these decades is visible in the cities of the Ruhr Area. The decline of the mining industry started at the same time and marks a strong contrast to the roseate atmosphere. As examples of the architectural and urbanistic signs of this time, gestern die stadt von morgen focussed on:

  • the new city center with town hall in Marl
  • the Ruhr-Universität Bochum
  • the Forum City in Mülheim a.d. Ruhr

Invited artists reflected upon today’s perception of these architectures by mirroring the already existing spaces with new, temporary works.

At the same time, the three museums showed exhibitions that deepen the thematic approach and connect the exterior spaces in the cities with the interiors of the institutions.
