EMSCHERKUNST.2013

22/06 – 06/10/2013

Art Exhibition in Public Space along the River Emscher

In terms of visual arts, the EMSCHERKUNST was the highlight of the European Capital of Culture Ruhr.2010 year. While the transformation of the Emscher – once an open canalization, now Europe's biggest construction site – into a near to nature stretch of water will last until 2020, the art exhibition will accompany the process. In 2013, the main topic was a new understanding of art in the public space placing participative aspects into the center. Commissioned by Urbane Künste Ruhr, Emschergenossenschaft, and the Regional Association Ruhr (RVR) numerous artists and groups worked with and about the region along the river. Like in 2010, Prof. Dr. Florian Matzner curated the event.
Daniel Buren was among the commissioned artists as well as the photographers Haubitz + Zoche, the artist duo M+M, the sculptor Michael Sailstorfer, the Argentinean performance and installation artist Tomás Saraceno, and the video artist Anna Witt, who presented a participative work together with the Swedish design collective Uglycute. Again, a writer, Florian Neuner, was commissioned in the framework of the EMSCHERKUNST. The container village Blowin' Free based at the visitor village Oberhausen marked the contribuition by the network KunstVereineRuhr. The EMSCHERKUNST.2013 invited all visitors throughout summer to discover the region and its transformation process along the river – by foot, bike, bus or ship.
