The Italian artist Mario Merz (1925-2003) discarded abstract expressionism’s subjectivity in favor of opening art to exterior space. A seed or a leaf in the wind becomes a universe on his canvas. He has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at institutions around the world, including Fundação de Serralves (Porto), Lehmbruck Museum (Duisburg), Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), and many more. In the years 1972, 1977, 1983 and 1992 Merz participated in the documentas 5, 6, 7 and 9. Amongst others, Merz was awarded the Oskar Kokoschka Prize and the Praemium Imperiale.
