The French painter and sculptor Daniel Buren plays with colours, shapes and effects. His trademark is stripes in different colours, always exactly 8.7 cm wide being applied to various shapes and materials (e.g. the black and white columns in the Inner Courtyard of the Paris Palais Royal). Since the 1950s he has been preserving memories of his travels in photo souvenirs, and applied their motives to Hermès silk scarves in 2011. Daniel Buren studied sculpture and painting at the École des Metiers d’Art in Paris from 1957 to 1960. He took part in several documenta exhibitions in Kassel.
