Ai Weiwei (*1957 in Beijing/China) is a Chinese sculptor, conceptual and installation artist, filmmaker, author and human rights activist. Ai Weiwei comments and criticizes the large-scale changes that have been taking place in China since the republic opened up economically. Ai Weiwei is one of the most renowned representatives of contemporary Chinese art. In 1978, Ai began to study at the film academy in Beijing. He lived in the USA from 1981 till 1993, primarily in New York, where he was engaged in performance and conceptual art. He graduated at the Parsons School of Design. In 2007 Ai Weiwei was participant of the documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany. During his imprisonment in 2011 he was admitted to the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and simultaneously held a visiting professorship at the Universität der Künste in Berlin.
