Julian Rosefeldt’s film installation for public spaces ‘Euphoria’ is a meditation on the winners and losers of globalization: people who seek to acquire more and more and others who have not yet given up hope of getting a little piece of the cake for themselves. Its texts are taken from so-called “phishing” e-mails. These invitations to become involved in dubious financial transactions that have been pasted together using translation programmes reveal the forces driving a rampant and ubiquitous capitalism. At the same time Rosefeldt discovers a curious poetry in these often absurd and apparently clumsy communications. ‘Euphoria’ is a contribution to the Ruhrtriennale by Urbane Künste Ruhr. The work can be seen after dark as a projection on the exterior wall of the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum.
Between 2015 and 2017 Julian Rosefeldt has created a total of four different works for the Ruhrtriennale. In 2015 he created a richly visual filmed scenography for the concert performance of Joseph Haydn’s ‘The Creation’ and in his accompanying installation ‘In the Land of Drought’ he looked back from an imagined future on the legacy of mankind in the Anthropocene. In 2016 with ‘Manifesto’ he raised the question of what is required to topple an epoch to allow the following one to begin. Here the Australian actress Cate Blanchett raised her voice on thirteen screens into a polyphony of manifestos from Western art and cultural history.
In the final season under Artistic Director Johan Simons, Julian Rosefeldt turns his attention to a thoroughly commercialized, digitally connected world fuelled by greed that has raised capitalism into a new religion: from the creation to creating added value.
